The 354 perkins in this tractor needs a sniff of starting fluid to start even in warm weather. The engine runs well and uses very little oil. What components should be checked to solve this problem? Diesel pump? lift pump?

Most of the 354's that were in the 2000 series masseys were notorious hard starters. They also like to knock and make all sorts of noise until they are warmed up, then hang on.

6000 is getting up there.

My local injector and pump shop (they are pretty good) says if you get more than 3000 out of a CAV pump you are doing OK.

I have a 175 with 6500 hrs., no pump or injector problems. A 285 with 4000 hrs., no fueling problems.

But, our 2705 with 3200 hrs. has a problem. I had the injectors cleaned and set, I checked valve lash, and I just checked compression, all are OK. The tractor has what I would call a flutter, you can see the tack bouncing and it just doesn't feel/sound right. It runs good, lots of power, but just not right. The pump is next on the list (and expensive). They say something to do with the govenor is the problem.

Hopefully you can find the problem before you spend big dollars on the pump.

Good Luck,
JP.

It is most likely a compression problem. I would check compression first. Since it does not use oil it may just need to have the head cleaned up a little.

If compression is OK then look at fuel system.

How many hours?
