Talk to some of the dealers around. I understand that 285's had some head gasket problems. I was looking at one this year and was told by a dealer that this could be problem.I am sure it depends on what it was used for and how it was cared for.

We love ours, it's got over 6100 hours on it now, and we put most of those on ourselves. It's somewhere around 80-85 HP with a good engine, if not a little more, but ours is just starting to get a little tired so it may be closer to 75.

They hold their value, so don't be surprised if they want $8,000 or more. Parts support is really good too.

Are they good tractors? We like ours, good power and easy to work on when repairs are neccessary.

I have a 1085 wich has the same engine.The 285 and the 1085 are like cousins.The 285 just has a lower profile.I have a brochure that says 81hp. I've heard others say 85. Dale

I have a 1085 which is a row crop version of the 285. I had to replace the head gasket after I got and 10 years later replaced the head gasket and head bolts. It's a very comfortable riding. Probably burns about 3 gallons of fuel on a heavy load.
