Bushogging with a 14fot mower the PTO stopped driving. I checked the hydraulic pressure externally and got only around 60 pounds and not sensitive to engine speed. I split the tractor and found clutch discs worn and warped. Pressure measured directly at the top of the pump was around 200 pounds. I ordered the clutch parts and ask my dealer to check availability of seals and wear plates for the pump. I got the clutch parts but found that repair parts are no longer available for the pump! I have replaced these parts twice in my Massey 175 with good results (4 years service)so was very disappointed. By the way, the high side still makes good pressure.

I found that there was .007 clearance between gears and wear plate. I know this is too much but is it sufficient to dump 700 pound of pressure? I was able to fashion a .006 shim to place behind the wear plate and it appears to have resolved the clearance problem. Problem is, I still wonder if I have missed another place where pressure is being lost, so have not re-assembled. The PTO control spool looks OK but I have not checked for blockage between the pump and control. One place some of the pressure is going is to the filter up by the radiator. How is this oil metered from the low side pump? My books have nothing on theory of operation

Sincerely,

Monty Jones
