There are some pretty distinctive aspects to a Perkins gas. They were developed from a diesel and so the block did not have a hole to mount a distributor on the side of the block. The Perkins distributor is run on the front of the right hand side of the block where the injection pump would mount on a diesel. So you have the distributor and carburetor on the same side of the engine which is unusual.

The spark plugs are on the left hand side so all of the plug wires have to run from the RH side to the LH side along the front end of the valve cover. The plugs are nearly vertical and enter the combustion chamber from the LH-side and top rather than angled from the side as on most in-line gas engines.

The Continentals will have a small metal ID plate somewhere, I think on the LH side. Perkins has a larger plate.

I own a 1974 165 with the gas engine. I'd prefer a diesel but had a chance to buy this one and it was in mint condition. I owned a 1963 MF-180 with the Continental gas. It was under-powered and under-torqued and it was a good thing when Massey got a gas version from Perkins to replace it.

Go with a diesel. I dont know much about the gas engines but I have a 165 diesel. It will pull all day long. I have kinda over abused mine from time to time pulling a offset disc. That was a lot of weight. Now I have a MF 3525 to pull my big stuff with. This will give the 165 a break. Also look for one that ha ssquare axles in the rear instead of round. I was told these are better. I dnt know if this is true. Mine has the round axles and does fine. Devin

The continental should have a tag on the left side of the engine if i'm remembering right, I'd have to look at ours to be sure. Another way, the continentals all have canister type oil filters on the right, they point up at an angle. The exhaust would be on the right also, I think the perkins has it on the left side. This is all while on the seat.

Continental would be a four cylinder gas. The perkins I believe would be a three cylinder. The Continental gas was already not being used by 1970 but I am not 100% sure.

All the 165's are 4 cylinders. 3-cyl. Perkins used on 135/150 ect.
