Hello.I just took delivery of a MF 1085 with multipower a few days ago.Everything seems ok. When I am rolling along up a slight hill, I hear a faint clack clack clack from what seems to be the rear of the tractor. The tractors engine is fairly loud, so I cant be sure. But I'm almost positive that it's coming from the rear of the tractor. When I push in the clutch, it quits.Release the clutch again, and it starts back up. If im chugging along on flat land, I dont think it does it.I dont think it does it going down a hill either.Only when its under load. What is this? Any ideas? I like to stop problems before they grow into bigger problems.Should I be worried about this? It's my problem now, so I'd like to find out. Thanks. Dale

Hydraulics is my guess and uncle merle seems to be on the same track as myself. Sorry if I did not describe things better. (of cause we could both be wrong)

Check your hydraulic settings. MF135's do this when the lever is set near constant pumping and it is the relief valve opening and closing.

Sit on the seat with the tractor running at idle. Look down at the 3pt levers and you will se two, the outside one is draft control and the inside one will be position and pressure control. The outside lever should be all the way back and the inside one should be about mid way forward. How to properlt position it is to lower the 3pt with the position control lever, then slowly raise it till it is all the way up, when the lever is to far forward you will hear the hydrolics start to labor. Back it off till they stop laboring and set the stops.

Good Luck
Merle

Hey merle, I set the outer lever all the way back, and slowly brought the inside lever forward until the "whining" of the pump stopped. This brought the 3 point arms all the way up.Now,I notice that if I go any further forward with the inside lever, the "whining" of the pump begins again.I think this is the "laboring" of the pump you were talking about. The metallic sounding tap tap tap tap tap seems to in rhytm with the engine, but only does it with clutch engaged, and engine under load, such as going up a slight incline. If the clutch is disengaged, and you rev the engine up and down the rpm range, its sounds like a good 'ol perkins should. If your in nuetral it sounds normal too.Other than that, no problems at all. What do you think?..... thanks alot...Dale

Your 3pt levers are now set and not causing the pump to over work. I placed a bolt in the slot of my 1080 so I can't bring the lever forward to where the pump labors/whines. Now if the click persists with the clutch engaged you can do a couple of checks to narrow down the problem. Find the throw out bearing grease zert and give it "one" pump, however take the plate off the the zert is coming through and make sure the hose is hooked up to the bearing. While the plate is off look up into the clutch to see if anything is out of the ordinary. With this done set the clutch free play if you have a manual do it as per the manual. No manual get one, ebay has factory manuals listed time to time and go for about $10 to $20 US. I have operators, service, and parts manuals and still have questions sometimes. It sounds as if you have a clutch problem but one never knows till you split the tractor and look into the bowels of it. You can test the Multi power to see if it is strong and not about to go out. Put the tractor in high range 3rd gear start driving down the road and open her up to about 1800 rpm (3/4 throttle). Then shift Multi power from low to high. The shift should be fast and hard, if it is slow and slushy your Multi power is getting weak and will need to be looked at when you have the tractor split for the clutch. This is about all I know and any problem other than what I have said you will have to ask "BIG DEAN". You have a good tractor just need to give it some TLC. I have a 1080 with a Westendorf WL-40 loader on it and LOVE it. It does everything I ask it to do but realize it is 30 something and only has 85 hp.

Good luck and if you need me to copy some pages out of the manual for you email me as I'll list my addy.

Merle

I was surfing the MF site and found your problem interesting. I own 4 MFs, including a 1085, and I've been an auto/truck mechanic for twenty years, so I have a possible other solution.
In the description of your problem you state that your problem only occurs under a load (when the tractor is pulling) most likely your problem is in your ring and pinion gear, on the pull side of the ring gear.
You may also try draining a little oil from the rear differential and look for signs of metal. (tiny bits and such) Driving the tractor up a hill brings the noise and going down the hill the noise goes away this is a good warning sign that there is a problem with the ring and pinion.
You may want to check this out as well as what the other guys suggested.
Good luck.
