I just bought a 1979 MF 2775 at an auction sale. What can anyone tell me about good and bad points on this tractor? It seems to be a real clean tractor with 3100+ hrs. What is the make of the V8 diesel engine?

The 24 spd. trans. is the weak spot. Goes bad and is expensive to repair. Straight 8 spd. seems to ok. Engine runs good. A little heavy on fuel. Same engine as a 2805 but no turbo.

Thanks Bob. I don't know for sure but I think this tractor may have a turbo put on it. This is my first MF experience. Is the engine Perkins or what? I don't have the tractor home yet. I bought it at a dealer inventory reduction sale 150 miles away and hope they have something else coming this way to take the edge off the trucking cost. When you say that 8 speed trans is better than 24 do you mean that the 3 sp powershift itself is the weak spot?

The engine is a 640 cu. V8 perkins. If it has a turbo then it will be the same as a 2805, about 195 hp. The 3 spd. power shift is the weak spot. If it goes out I would recomend turning it into a straight 8 spd. I have a 2805 and it has the 8 spd. trans. and I get along good with it. Hope I helped some.

Thank you Bob, you are a lot of help. I got the tractor home today and just drove up and down the road a little with it. It does have turbo, the way they plumbed it they had to cut a new hole in the rh hood closer to the windshield for the muffler. The trans oil pressure light stays on until get the engine up over 1000 rpm. Also Power shift oil pressure light flickers occasionally at low rpm. I see both axle housings have been off some time because I see blue silicone gasket stuff. Ominous signs? Seemed to drive good and good crisp shifts.

Carefull with that turbo. The Perkins V8.640 used in the 2775 was not designed for the turbo. Many parts are lighter duty than the TV8.640 used in the 2805. Including the crankshaft, rods and pistons. A freind of mine was in a test lab at Detroit doing prototype work on these before release. The natural 640 came apart with the addition of the increased stress. The good part is we saw a normal life of 8000 hrs when it was left stock. If you ever have problems with the 3 speed power shift just install all the updates and they run for many thousands of hours. The first three years of production Massey was slipped inferior parts by several suppliers that caused 99% of the 24 speed problems. I no longer remember the S/N break, but all the problems were cured.
As for your silicon you see, Massey used the Permatex Ultra blue, (medium to dark blue), if it is the light blue stuff someone has been in there.
Your local dealer should have a pressure reading for the trans circut so you can check it. (My books are in the attic) I do however remember the light flicker on some tractors that were fine. Good luck with it and make sure to wax it once a year.

A to long ago Massey dude.
