FE 35 Deluxe New Temperature Gauge Problem

I feel like a real dummy because this looked like such a simple repair.
I just installed a new radiator on my FE 35 and figured I would replace the non-working temp gauge while I was at it. Got the gauge from an after market shop in Ontario Canada but it doesn"t seem to work consistently. When I first installed it it did not register any change in temp after about 30 minutes of operation but as soon as I shut the tractor off the needle went up to the normal area and then slowly dropped down. The next time, after another half hour of running, the needle was barely off the pin at the lowest end.

This gauge had a short wire attached that I assumed was for a light (the old gauge did not have this wire) Is it possible this is a ground wire?? Or am I missing something that should be really obvious? Thanks for any suggestions
Bob

It sounds to me like you might have a air pocket in the engine and there is no coolant passing by the sending unit. I've seen it a few times on different engines. I warped a aluminum head once like that.

Check and make sure the metal line from the block to the gauge is not touching any type of electrial connection. I had one doing what you described and it turned out that at times it touched a terminal connection next to the gauge.

Sounds like you might be missing a thermostat.
