I don't much about sickle mowers but ran across a massy harris no.6 mower. Is the no.6 a pretty good mower. this one needs tires and some kind of wood piece that works the sickle. He wanted $50 for it. and does anyone know what time frame they made that mower? thanks

The #5/#6 MH sickle mowers run from late 30's, to
around '52(?). similar frame, #5 had a cast housing over the chain PTO drive to lower pitman
drive, #6 used pressed steel. The wood you mention
as broken, is the pitman arm. Chronic broken blades on these mowers, for cutting fields. The
redeeming feature is the J hitch, quick hookup to
a MH tractor. For out building property cutting, perhaps adequate. Cutting a hay field, forget it.
If used on a MH tractor, the J hitch may be worth
the $50, unless hacked up by a torch. For serious
field sickle cut, w/ a 30 or 44 MH, look for a New
Holland 44/45 series sickle mower, highly efficient mower. If the non-3 point hitch is not
attached, consider a retro-fit of the old J hitch,
two bolts secure it to a 30/44. Good luck.

Hello Harris Guy,
You mention the NH 44/45 mowers. In the UK we had a 445E cutterbar (sickle bar) mower. It had belt drive down to a rocker mechanism for the blade. Is this the same type but with a different number? It was an excellent machine but like all cutterbars had problems coping with dense laid growth. The outstanding memory of ours was that it was virtually silent in use.
It made way for a MF 51 disc mower and then a two drum PZ.

The double digit models, here, became triple,
451(3 point), 456(trailer) around early 70's. Your model number is not one I recall offered
in the USA. NH was still producing the 451 a few
years ago, in 7' & 9' cutter bar.
