I have a 1958 MF35 with a perkins diesel. I recently rebuilt the engine, all is well except I cannot get the combustion cap on one cylinder to seal. I have new gaskets, but it continues to blow air past the seal on #1 cylinder. Any one have any ideas what is wrong, it is driving me nuts.

Hello Dorian -

They can be troublesome. Seem to warp around the bolt holes.

I've had success truing them up in a lathe. Taking off a few thou, just enough to clean up most of the gasket surface. Sometimes have to take a bit off the cup lip too, if it hits the mating surface inside the head.

Measure the distance from the gasket surface to the top of the cup on the cap before you start, and if you take off more than a couple of thou from the shoulder, cut a bit off the top too.

Tricky to hold. 4-jaw independent chuck, 3/8" or 1/2" plate behind to help align the cap and prevent you from cutting the chuck jaws. Takes a few tries to get it aligned both for zero wobble and for minimum cut.

Some caps had ring gaskets, and a corresponding ring machined on the gasket surface on the cap. about 3/16" wide, about 5 thou thick. The newer gaskets are the full size of the cap, and the ring is not necessary, but observe the depth measurement discussed earlier, and cut the cap accordingly.

Hope this helps.
