Should be a negative ground. These tractors were built in the 1970s. MF kept using generators long after all cars were fitted with alternators so do not be surprised if was origionally fitted with a generator. Many early model MF tractors have been converted to use alterenators when the generator has died.

All MF175 had a negative ground with a generator or an alternation it makes no difference

If it has an alternator to charge the battery it will require a negative ground.

I looked and it has a generator. I also noticed that its a 'late' Mf 175 with the cast front wheel centers. I appreciate the help from all the responses.

i do body work, so I'm not a mechanic-Of course it seems like people dont know the difference with the number of mechanical jobs im asked to do. But this is my next question. The tractor is not at my house, so i cant look right this second if it has an alternator, but it seems to be a pretty big tractor. It has lights. I know you cant say with out looking, bit since the lights are headlight size, wouldnt it be more likely they would be run off of an alternator instead of the battery? To me, it seems like the headlights would drain the battery unless it had an alternator. I appreciate the response-thank you

The size of headlights really doesn't mean anything. our 165 has 5 lights that run off the generator, and while they do discharge at slower speeds, when the engine is at working speeds the generator has plenty capacity. Othertimes, if the battery discarges some at night, the next time you run it during the day it'll catch up just fine.
