I have a Massey Ferguson with the Continental Z-145 engine and lately with a load on the PTO (mower) the tractor runs fine for about two minutes then starts to slow down and almost stall out. If I reduce the throttle to idle, the engine stays running - but will almost stall again if I give it some throttle. Sound like carb trouble??

Don't forget, there is a fuel line filter where the fuel line enters the carb.

Also, you may have sediment clogging the system at teh fuel tank. Remove the entire sediment bowl assembly if you are not getting a good stream of fuel flowing into the sediment bowl.
I had this problem with a MF20 gas and you wouldn't believe the trash that washed out of the fuel tank. I had cleaned the fuel lines, filters etc. to no avail. Unscrewing the sediment bowl assembly and cleaning the tank fixed my problem.

When these kind of problems occur, check your spark first and make sure that you have a fat, bluish spark when you pull the center high tension wire out of the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and try a start. If you have a fat bluish spark, then check the timing and the advance mechanism to make sure that the spark is occuring at the right time and the advance mechanism is working properly. If all that is OK, check the adjustment of the main jet. Pull a spark plug and see if it's fouled with black, fluffy carbon, indicating too rich a mixture. If the plug isn't fouled and it cough's on acceleration, suspect an overly lean mixture. Make any adjustment as directed in your owner's manual. Start it up and check out the running if you make any adjustments to the timing and/or the carburetor. jot down the results of what you find to help you analyze the results of the diagnostics you are doing.

THEN look at the fuel system. Open the tank valve and remove the drain plug from the bottom of the carburetor holding a can under it to catch the $3/gal gas. The flow should be fast AND continuous. If it isn't, start by checking the "secret filter" in the fuel elbow at the carb and work your way back to the tank valve. As mentioned, make sure that the fuel vent in the fuel cap is clear. If there's nothing clogging the fuel delivery then suspect a hung float or a restricted float valve in the carb. Rap the carb with a block of wood to free a hung float. If that doen't help, you'll have to remove the carb and disassemble it.

Hi F1

Seems to be fuel restriction...

You may unscrew the plug under the carb catch
the gas with a non metallic container. You shd have aboundant and steady gas flow there. If not remove the gas cap on the tank (vent may be blocked). If no change the fuel filter strainer in the tank or the strainer at the top of the bowl may me obtructed. If the gas flow is OK it may be caused by too old gas in the tank.. too old gas even mixed with fresh gas may do that.

You may check these few things and return to us for further suggestions.

Good luck

Yep

Carb trouble is possible. I had a similar incident with water in gasoline. I have heard a dirty air cleaner will cause loss of power as well.
