I have a massey 40B Perkins Diesel with Back hoe. I was running it this morning and it just bogged down and died. I started smelling oil burning and looked for hydraulic leaks and found none. I restarted it and heard a knock from the engine. The oil pressure was 0. I shut it down and checked the oil. there was none there. I refilled it with oil and it did start then made a noise then shut down. The motor will not turn with the starter now.

It is all my fault and I feel like an idiot. Now I have to pay for my laziness. I have a good shop manual and can will pull the engine myself. Would just like to hear what all I should do while I have the engine out. Thanks for any advice,

Wyman

Hi,
Everyone is giving good advice but perhaps they are all looking on the black side. It's just possible that it may only be a 'big end' shell pair that has turned or started to pick up.
If you have access it might be worth removing the pan and checking the 'big end' shells. In all probability it will be the one furthest from the oil pump that will suffer. Turn the crank to BDC and remove the cap and push the rod upwards until you have access to the journal. Inspect for bits of bearing stuck to it and remove with fine emery tape. If there are counterbalance weights fitted to the crank you will have to remove these first. Checking it now might save you a lot of money later.
Good luck
DavidP

Guess What. I Jump started it this morning and it is running. Holding 40 psi oil pressure and not Knocking. Prayers answered, Maybe problems down the road but it is running now. Thanks for the input.

Been there, done that. A difficult and expensive lesson. Once you have the engine out, that's the time to replace the clutch and throwout bearing. Yes, it's more $$$$, but do it while you're right there.

Goes to show, you can run an engine without coolant for maybe a few minutes but running with out oil shut it down ASAP.

Yeah sounds like you did some major damage, if not something physically cracked and is now locking the engine up. Sounds like you will be re-doing the entire engine if you didn't ruin the block.

That one sounds like a top to bottom job. New sleeves if it has them, new pistons/rings. The crank will need to be turned and the valves done. You will also probably be better off if you replace the cam.Either way it goes thats not good and will cost you big time
