Hi all, I need to do a minor rebuild on my 1960 MF 35 generator. replacing brushes is something I have not done since I was a teen (20 odd years ago). So, before I get myself in trouble, I thought I was get some expert advice. I have already removed the two back bolts and plate, so I can see the brushes and 50 years of dirt. So some questions are:
1. what is the best way to remove the pulley and fan? basiclly how do you keep it from turning while I remove the pulley nut. I don't want to jam the fan with a screw driver and break the fins on it.
2. What should I use the clean all the grime inside with? Elect. parts spray you get at the auto store?
3. What type of grease should I use for the shaft in the end plate.
4. who has a good generator repair kit?
thanks for all you help, without you guys, I would have broke more then I fixed!
Kurt

Electomotive cleaner, or Brake Cleaner (the same thing) to clean it with. Use an air impact gun to remove the nut holding the pulley on - anything else and you'll screw up the fan and/or pulley. NO grease in the back end. Use engine oil. Grease will not soak into the pores of the oilite bronze bushing, and will clog it up causing quicker wear. You don't need a generator repair kit. All you need is a new front bearing (#203 shielded or sealed) a rear bushing, and new brushes. All from a GOOD parts store. If you decide to dress up the commutator (copper part where the brushes ride) use ONLY flint sandpaper. Get it at any woodworking store. Anything other than flint will become lodged in the copper and either short it out or cause premature wear. Make a little stiff wire hook to pull the brush springs up and cock the brushes in the holders so you can put the end back on over the commutator. You can do it - have fun!

Thanks Jerry! man, to think using an air impact gun. really gets me that it didn't occur to me to use that. Glad I asked first! Thanks again for taking the time to set me straight!!
