tach drive when replacing generator with alternato

I work on a Super 90 gas that my brother-in-law owns. He would like an alternator and I looked at kits like from Genessee products which cound attractive but their alternators do not have a tachometer ("tractormeter" ) drive to drive the mechanical tach on this tractor. He does not want to lose the tach function. Any suggestions?

Did the later 100-series tractors - 165, 175, 180 with Continental gas engines run the tach off the alternator. We had a 1963 180 with the Continental and that still had a generator, last machine we ever bought that did not have an alternator. If so, are these alternators -- used or rebuilt -- prohibitively expensive?

Also, doe anyone know of modern solid-state voltage regulators to replace the electromechanical current and voltage regulators that were original with this tractor? If he is going to stay with the generator he needs a better voltage regulator.

Any info will be appreciated.

Ed

There are aftermarket tachs available called tinytach which work from a sensor on one of the injector pipes. An alternator with a built in regulator is not hard to find these days. Usually worth replacing the brushes and they will serve for many a year.

The Late MF100 series tractors with the Continental engines did have an alternator that has an external regulator they will cost about $200 unless you can find one at a salvage
