Problem started out as a clogged strainer in the tank last fall. After that was cleaned it ran fine till this spring and the problem returned. It takes a lot of cranking and bleeding to finally get it running again, then it will run anywhere from 5 min. to several hours before shutting down again. Have good flow from the tank to the injector pump. We do have a very small leak where the line from the tank goes into the fuel bowl. There is a thick rubber washer here between the flare and the nut. Could this be the problem? Tractor is 1 1/2 hrs from home so any tips before making the trip would sure be appreciated.

I think everyone is on the right track with the lift pump. Kits are available but you will need to replace the valves inside which are in the kit. This can be fiddly and a little tool, a socket of exact size will make it a lot easier. Would recommend a new pump rather than a repair.
Remove the pump and operate it manually. If it is OK you should hear a sort of 'donkey' sound and should be able to feel the vacuum and pressure with a finger over the port. If this appears to be reasonably strong, tou will probably need to look elsewhere. Do you have the problem more when the tank is full or towards empty. It's just possible that the fuel cap is blocked. Undo the cap a little until it is loose and try the tractor. Let us know.

Wonder why they need the "lift/primary" pump in the first place. There should be plenty of pressure from gravity to move fuel down to the inj. pump.

As you say, you need to bleed it to get it running again. Means it get air in somewhere.

Sometimes it can get air in through bad rubberhoses, but those are not often present on those tractors unless some have used rubberhoses to replace a pipe.

The most common thing is a leaking primary fuel pump, the thin rubber gets a leak, so it sucks in air everytime it pumps, and finaly it is enough air in the system to stop the engine.

Get a repair kit for it and you will most likely be happy again. At least I would start with that.

Guys

Dj vu.

See previous posts Frequently needing to bleed 148 Diesel. I took out the fuel tank a couple of weeks back, cleaned it out and thought I had the problem solved, but no problem back with a vengeance !! Next stop I reckon is to check out the fuel lift pump. It is sure is one frustrating problem.

I just went through a similar problem. Here's what I found out along the way.

First, check to see that the fuel petcock and fittings on the fuel tank are clean and unobstructed. Make sure the fuel tank is clean inside too.

Next, check for dirty or water-logged fuel filter(s).

My problem was the primary fuel pump. That's the small mechanical pump on the side of the engine block, oposite side from injector pump. Mine wasn't pumping all the time. At low engine speeds, it would quit putting fuel to the injector pump. The inj. pump would then cavitate. New primary pump and troubles solved.
