MF50 pull a 9' disc?

This disc has 4 gangs (I think that's the right terminology), 7 discs on each. Is it reasonable to expect a 1960 MF50 to pull this? I think it's rated approx 30 hp when new.
Thanks!

My 50 diesel runs too hot with a 10 ft disk, so be careful. Just because it will pull it dont mean its good for it.

Are you SURE it's a 9' disc?

My 7' disc has 7 blades on each gang. And I use it with an MF35.

If your MF50 can pick it up easily, I'm sure it will pull it O.K. also.

It's got 28 discs total. It is 9' across in the back and narrower in the front. The back set of discs are set wider than the front so they catch the dirt thrown out by the front set.

For general disking of plowed ground you need about 5 to 6 PTO HP per foot of tandem disk; i.e., 5 foot = 25-30 HP; 6 foot = 30-36 HP; 8 foot = 40-48 HP. You will have better speed and pulverizing action at about 7 HP per foot, and will be able to set gangs agressive as desired, and not overwork tractor. Sell the 9 footer and look for a 6 footer. It is gas. What damage is likely to happen if I use it? Or will it just not work? I did some discing this weekend and it didn't work too bad.
Will it help to straighten out the discs so they're at less of an angle?
Thanks!

I read your reply on the other board. I saw where you were running in low/2nd or low 3rd. That's kinda slow for discing. (Around 3 to 3-1/2MPH I believe) A disc needs to be at minimum, 4 MPH and more like 5 MPH to do a good job.

You won't "hurt" anything, other than your budget for gasoline.

And I'll stick with my earlier comment about NOT pulling that disc in plowed ground.

Reducing the angle of the gangs will let it pull easier at the expense of not doing much in the way of working your dirt.

So let's recap. You'll be going too slow, not discing very aggressively, and burning a TON of gas. I'd look for a smaller disc or a bigger tractor.

Tractordata says this:
Drawbar (HP): 34 PTO (HP): 38

Tractortips says this:
Horsepower - PTO: 38.33 Horsepower - Drawbar: 34.2

Big difference from saying it is a '30' hp rated machine.. Yor are de-rating it by about 25%..

Those are ratings on the Perkins diesel version. Gasser was rated at 32 on the PTO (Neb test)

jr01, is your 50 gas or diesel?

BTDT, had both versions, STILL won't pull a 9' disc in most conditions

Even if gas.. and 32 pto ( 35 engine? ) I sure wouldn't advertise it as a 30 hp machine. Thos 5 hp can make the difference in a mower size.. etc... like difference between 5' and 6' rotary mower.

Something else to keep in mind. That 32 HP was 46 years ago. I'd bet that tractor hasn't got the grunt it had back when it was new. It may be LESS than 30 by now.

I've noticed Massey Ferguson "specs" vary wildly from website to website, and from book to book. (All brands have some "errors in reporting", but Masseys seem to be very erratic.)

But like you noted, when you've only got 32 horses to begin with, you sure don't wanna throw out a couple of 'em.

I do agree that as an engine ages.. if ti is not maintained it may drop power.. however.. looking at my N tractors ( 8n - 27 hp.. it runs a 5' mower fine... my NAA 32 hp... runs a 6' mower fine ). I've done many a compression test on a 50 year old engine.. and been surprised to still find them within the manufacturers minimum specs.. for instance.. minimum 90 psi and less than 10 psi difference between wet vs dry, and between adjacant cylinders. i imagine if you are within your manufacturers minimum specs.. you will probably be close to rated hp. That said... I've seen tractors that constantly dyno above their specs... My NH 7610s was dyno'ed at the dealer when i bought it. it peaked at a few hp above rated hp. I figure the old ones were like that to. Rated conservatively.. in a way.. that is good... after a few decades you loose a couple hp and drop compression to low-average.. and you may just still be on the marginal/low side of your rated hp spec..

Very rare that you will find an old tractor that still has a tight engine, good ignition system, and a good clean fuel system. Restored or hobby tractors might be common to find good ones. On a farm working everyday probably will find a tired old worn down motor. It's more common to find diesels running at or above factory rated horses. Most come that way new. Plus its easier to get more than spec from a diesel.

That's a whole lotta disc for that tractor. It would pull it under some conditions, but not in plowed ground, or up a hill. I'd try something more like 6-1/2' or 7'.
