I have an 85 massey ferguson. I have heard from someone that they have a weak transmission compared to other masseys. Can anyone out there tell me if this is right. Just split this tractor because two shafts siezed and i am wondering if it would be best to sell tractor. Thanks

I would make sure the gunk is cleaned out of the
case and some production had a screen filter you
could clean but wouldn't fix anything that ain't
broke. The power strg/pto pump is easy to pull off
the side when all together. The early 85's had a
stub inlet screen on that pump. Later production
(Plus any we ever worked on) had a screen with a
short curved pipe with screen filter to sink it
deeper into the oil. The short one,on steep side-
hills, could cavitate. Nice handling and short
steering tractor. Chuck

I have 2 MF 85 and 2 super 90 tractors, never had transmission problems with any of them. One 90 has multi-power. Still farm with them.

We sold many MF 85's new and used when we had a
dealership. I would challenge anyone on this. They
did not have a weak transmission. Make sure P.S.
pump is ok. They are a bit hard to get. Chuck

Thanks Chuck.
Tractor steers awesome even with loader full of dirt. Is it a good idea to pull pump out while tractor is split? I know i dont need to split to pull pump but it is easier to do while oil is drained.
