I hate to open the subject again, but when I searched teh archives and went through the relevant posts - including the thread I started back in Nov02 on the subject - I found too many uncertainties to be sure, so will ask the questions again.

The obvious answer that need not be repeated is to go to teh MF dealer and buy the correct filter. I rarely am in the neighborhood, and teh round trip at today's gas prices costs me $10 just for gas - even in my 4-cyl Ford Ranger. So...

One reply to my previous thread suggested several popular brand filters (Fram, AC, etc.) that are available at most auto parts and even Walmart. Two suggested a Wix 51460 filter from an auto parts store. Here's the numbers yet another poster gave: PH 2870A, AC PF 56, Wix 51318. I'm inclined to go with the Wix, but now have two different numbers. The 51318 is shown on the Wix site as for JD with Yanmar engine, so will assume it's not the one.

However, then somebody mentioned by-pass pressure and that the MF-35 spec calls for 8-12 psi, and pointed out that the Fram is 30 and the AC is 8 psi.

I went out to the Wix site and used their filter finder and the one they recommend is also 51460 - same as the number given by the posters in my old thread - with bypass at 15-17 psi.

Others spoke up for various options. One poster talked about why too high a bypass is bad, others said they never worry about it as long as they change regularly. Finally, one poster who sells Baldwin filters recommended a Baldwin B-243 with a bypass of 8 psi. It was a nice long thread with lots of participation. Big Dean was out of town, so didn't participate.

I'm inclined to go with the Wix 51460, but...still have those little nagging feelings about the 15-17 psi bypass.

Sooooo ....anybody care to jump in and try clarifying this whole thing?

Thanks for whatever you can offer.

Got a Massey 150, 1972, about 3100 hours. Last 2000 with WIX 51460. Most hours are bush hogging or running a 6' tiller. (moderate to heavy load) Oil/filter change every 100 hours. 15/40 Pennzoil.

Oil pressure is still right on the mark. Engine is in near new condition. I put pan gaskets on earlier this spring. INSIDE of engine is spotless.

I'm not saying there isn't something better, only that WIX 51460 works just fine. (NAPA #1460, Made by WIX)

Poor...Thanks! Will be getting it at NAPA so that's good info. That must be the one I bought at some time in the past but lost the numbers.

I hate to come across as a smart alec but 10 dollars will seem really low compared to something going wrong with the engine.I just converted my 35 perkins diesel to spin on two weeks ago. Drove 1 hour to the nearest MF dealer and bought the adapter and the MF filter for 30 dollars cdn. The parts guy told me that the filter they use is the same one that they install on the 165 diesels which are alot more tractor. Some things are not worth trying to save a nickel over.

Hi Rick, (think I am talking to myself!)
Would you happen to have a part number for that spin-on converter? I have an FE35 with 3 cyl diesel that I want to convert. Thought if I had the number, it might save me some aggravation at the parts counter!

Nope...not smart alec at all. That's the most common answer to this kind of question. Hear it all the time. Agree to a point.

Thanks for the reply.

What does by pass pressure mean? I must have missed the other post on this topic. Does it mean that the oil passing through the filter is bypassed after the pressure reaches 8 lbs? I'm not a design engineer, so why would a higher bypass pressure be a bad thing? I've always thought that oil pressure was measured, or at least is an indication of the quality of the bearings.....what am I missing?

Bill...from one of the replies in my previous thread back in Nov02, from Jack in NB....
===== ===== ===== ===== ===== ==
"The bypass pressure is the pressure that oil will run by, not through, the filter when it builds up too much resistance - usually from crud.

This normally doesn't happen if they're changed regularly.

Test: put your hand on the filter after the engine warms up. If the filter is warm, the oil is flowing through it.

There is a difference in filters. There was a website (no longer around) which compared different makes of filters for (I think) a chev. The filtering paper area was the biggest difference - Fram had about half the area that OEM or Wix had. I'm guessing Fram threatened the owner of the site with legal action.

So they sell cheaper!

We've been running the 35's, 135's, 65, 165, 30 and 40 industrial (10 units total) for 25 years now - probably 20,000 hours total on them, with off-the-shelf filters, changed regularly. (every 100 hours.) No problems evident."
