I tried to post earlier about the problem but it did not show up in forum. Sorry if a double post turns up. Last year I posted about the motor "laying down" out of the blue. Yesterday while mowing it starting spitting and sputtering, almost going dead on me several times.I cut it off and checked to make sure the gas valve was open and when I restarted it ran perfect for about 5 minutes but started to act up again.
It had recently begun to run as if it had no power. The motor wouldn't rev-up as normal using the throttle lever but I could move the governor rod by hand and it would seem as if it were normal. I replaced points rotor, condensor, plugs and plug wires last fall and it ran great until the last few weeks. Also last year I cleaned out the filter canister and put oil in. Almost seems as if the engine is choking down. It is the old original Z-134 Continential four cyclinder ('62 model). Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Durand

I always recommend you check your spark first. If that's OK, i.e. a fat bluish spark, then take a look at the fuel system. Since you tuned it last fall, the points could have gotten some corrosion on them or a film of oil, etc and you 're not getting a strong spark. This is especially true if it's a 6 Volt system. It only takes 2 minutes to check the spark and eliminate that as a potential cause of poor running. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that it's the carb or fuel system but the only way you can be sure is by a procss of elimination and that should start with the ignition system check first. If you don't know how to check the spark quickly, post back and I'll tell you.

My 35 gas did the something like that last year. Turned out on mine that I had trash in the line between the carb and fuel turn off. Would restrict the flow allowing for not enought to fuel to allow for any power. Would choke down and die. Would restart almost immediately run a while and do it again. I finnally ended up cleaning everything several times. Looked like a piece of straw. May not be of any help but thought I would put in my 2 cents. Lot of luck..

Thanks for all the replies! Jerry M/T- I saw in an earlier post where you mentioned how to check the spark. Does this apply if the ignition system has been changed to 12 volt? My brother changed out the generator for a one wire altenator and we put a 12 volt coil on it. I replaced the points a couple of weeks ago but it doesn't seem to make a difference, the points in it had a small burn on the contact surface. Love this old tractor and want to get it running like it was earlier!

Many thanks to all and I'll post back when I find out the problem.

Durand

That method works on any voltage. If your points are burning, I'd suspect the condensor was bad or the point gap too small.

Mike:

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking first of going through the fuel system and cleaing out all the lines and filters. If this didn't pan out, I was going to get a carb o/h kit and go thru it since I haven't done this in years. I have rebilt the carb before but it has been a long time ago. I would like to overhaul the engine at some point, how difficult was yours to redo? I have rebuilt car motors in the past without problems but the tractor may be a little different, don't know. Talked with a local engine shop and they wanted ~$1200 to rework the engine and I think this is expensive considering a kit is avaiable for less than $500.

Sounds familiar. I had an MF 135 with a Z145 that did the same thing. I rebuilt the engine top to bottom (which helped in other ways)but it still had spells. I rebuilt the carb twice (thinking I did it wrong the first time) which helped a little but still ran rough after an hour or so. I'm certain it's the carb; I've talked to mechanics who say those carberators are hard to keep adjusted. It can be tuned out by adjusting the hi idle screw every time you use it. I finally cured the problem by buying a diesel tractor. Hope that helps.
