Howdy guys,
My Massey 165 (circa 1973) threw a rod through the block an hour ago. I"m sick over it. Can anybody recommend an inexpensive yet reliable source for Perkins AD4.203 engines? I"d hate to scrap the tractor "cause I just put $3,000.00 bucks in it! I live in the Louisville, KY area. Many thanks for your suggestions.
Matt

Call Doug Parrish @ 502-961-0905 for starters.

I'll leave my email open. Contact me there. I Might know where a complete tractor is at. (in need of MUCH repair. Might yield a good block though)

Ask Doug for the number to Pleasant Hill Tractor Parts while you have him on the phone.

(You from Sellersburg In?)

Well, since you're in Georgetown, how about the nearest Massey dealer. (That'd be Batliners in Floyds Knobs) Also, there's a good salvage yard West of Salem. (That might be who you're talking with) I'll check on the 165 I was talking about. It has a ROPS and canopy that I want. If the owner will sell, and it's a good block, I'll give you a ring.

Hi Matt, I am sorry to hear about your loss. Do you have friends you can talk to about it ? I mean so you don't have to suffer all by yourself ? Sorry, jokes aside.
Tell us the area you live in, then maybe someone knows. I can't even search the net for a block when I have no idea where you are located.

Hey Bill,
Should I postpone the funeral?

See previous reply. I'm in Georgetown, Indiana. Any help is appreciated.

BTW, anybody ever rebuild one of these? I've rebuilt a few car engines but never a diesel. Harder, easier, comparable...? I found a refurbished block in Salem Indian and may buy the kit and do it myself unless I can find either another complete tractor or a reasonably priced rebuilt motor.WWJD?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Yes please, postpone the funeral way into the future.

A diesel engine is not more complicated to overhaul in itself than a gas engine. However, most diesels have sleeves, and that is different from most gas engines.
Then, when you say to yourself that oh, these ridges is not to big, I just put on new piston rings, in a diesel you do not say that. Because the diesel have much more compression pressure, the wear in the cylinders means more to a diesel than a gas engine. All in all, a diesel needs to be more accurate than a gas engine, less wear can be tolerated.

This is my opinion.

If you get a way to have the head rebuilt, and the sleeves replaced, there is no reason you can not overhaul your own AD4-203 engine.

Oh I forgot, if you are looking for a rebuild kit, don't forget the original kit from the local MF dealer. Pretty often they have the 10+ parts on sale, and then you get it for the same price as any aftermarket price.
