I have a 1958 MF 65. I have done a tune up set the timing and adjusted the carb. I just think it uses too much fuel. The main jet is about 1 and a half turns out. It runs good gives a belch of black smoke when I start to climb a hill while using the mower every now and then. I only have to open the fuel bowl knob a half turn to make it run. I mow about two acres and guess I'm using about 4 to 5 gallons of gas.

Does this sound about right? Should I be considering a rebuild of the carb. and replacement of the fuel bowl?

Just need some input on this. This is my first tractor, so I might be worried about nothing.

Thanks
Steve

My JD318 lawnmower uses 2-21/2 gals gas in 2 hrs and it is only 18hp. My yard is 11/2 acres

Hi
Had a 65 high arch gas 12"-38" rear tires many years ago for light jobs
1.5 gal/hour for plowing and heavy work 4.0 gal/hour
at that time I sold it and bough a 65 high arch diesel for same
heavy jobs 2 gal/hour. Fuel economy made my payments. These tractors were gas hungry when new your tractor is 48 years old may be worst now.

If you want to save fuel and avoid premature worn
on your 48 years old tractor use lower gear and take half width
when mowing in tall or dense grass raise the mower for first turn... "will give you more seat time". The engine RPMs must not drop more than
200-300 RPM on load compared to no load if RPM drops more than that use a lower gear and lower if necessary. Regular oil changes and a daily coolant and oil level checks are recommended.

This is my 45 years experience with tractors and machinery
and my 2 story

Good luck

Forgot to mention....

If you rarely use your tractor buy premium gas
because nowadays the gas lost quality in short time
regular gas stored for few weeks will have octane
lower than needed for good engine operation.

Premium gas has better combustion characteristics
and will avoid carbon deposits and combustion byproducts. In long run premium gas utilization
cost will be benefit.
