I have been thinking about down sizing to a smaller tractor. My MF 165 dsl has been great but it is just to big for the work I do with it. It is a 1971 MF 165 dsl, ps, diff lock, live PTO, 8f 2r hi-lo trans, above average paint, good tires, approx 3050 hrs, Grill guard,(Row Crop 13.6x38 rears), front & back tires weighted and located in Central VA. I can not decide if I should sell out right or use it for a trade-in for a newer smaller model maybe even something with a loader. I know if I use it for a trade in I will get less for it but I maybe able to get some decent financing. Not really sure what I want to do, just need some advice. Thanks in advance

If you want to sell your MF 165, what are you asking for it and where exactly are you located?

I'm near Martinsburg, WV on I-81. Can you e-mail me photos to my e-mail address above?

Thanks. Zill

What kind of work do you do w/ it that you feel it's too big?

Jeff

Jeff, I got a really great deal on the tractor, I wanted a tractor that was big enough that I could aventually add a loader to. Family does not farm anymore. I only have 5 AC and I just maintatin my drive way, property and bushhog alittle around my aunts, uncles and brother place to help keep it up. Uncle has Ford 3000 dsl, Brother has Ford 2910 dsl. The MF 165 is great but is just to big when it comes to trailering and manuverablity when I do side work. I usually end up using my Uncles 3000 Ford because it smaller, lighter and more manuvarable in tight spots. The MF 165 would be better for open field work. I figure I could find something smaller & newer with a loader and still do everything I need. Plus it's just a big toy!!! I am going to start looking for tractor 35-40 hp with a loader already installed. Charlie

Charlie...I see what you mean on the trailering, it weighs more than a half-ton truck. Lots of guys would love to have one in the condition you describe, though. That Perkins diesel is a great engine.

We've had our 165 for about 25 years now & would hate to lose it, but we need it for the 1000# round bales. I installed a loader on it, so it'll carry 2 at a time. However, after restoring our old 8N I discovered it gets used more for all the other stuff you describe(blading the road, mowing around the house, etc.).

You might consider an 860 or 861 for quite a bit less $$, unless you prefer the diesel.

Jeff

I would not trade it in. Advertise it in one of the tractor sales sites or tabloid magazines. Price does vary by region of the country. Check with a local auctioneer or look for asked prices in classified ads section of farm newspaper. If you don't have many of those in VA email me at [email protected] and I can help you find some reference

You could also consider putting smaller rubber on it. Does it also have the high arch type front spindles? Smaller wheels would slow it down a fair bit in the high range high gear. Its a shame to sell off a good machine. A 165 would make a very good loader tractor. Does it have factory auxillaries or the aux hyd pump?

You have about a 90 percent chance of getting a royal screwing if you go the trade-in route. IF you just have to get rid of your MF65 then, best sell your tractor for top dollar and use the money as your down payment. For me I would keep the mf65, look for a good FEL for it. But to each his own. Tom
