Just wondering what the proper fluid to use in a 1085 with multipower would be. I saw an old post where Big Dean was talking about that but now I cant find it. I remember reading that if the right stuff is not used, serious problems could result. It is my understanding that the same stuff is used for the power steering, multipower, pto, 3 point, everything. Is that right? I"l take delivery in about a month, and the first thing I want to do is change all the fluids, and filters.Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Also, where is all the filter locations?

Thanks Dale in N.C.

Choices:
MF Permatran III
Chevron 1000 THF
Pennzoil Hydra-Tranz
Shell Rotella Heavy Duty Universal Tractor Fluid
Mobilfluid 424

These all meet the MF Permatran III spec, which is M1141. I have switched to the Chevron 1000 THF, as I can get it at the distributor. It is orange colored to help find any leaks. Tom

The transmission three point hydraulic and differential are all one big reservoir They use MF Permatran 3 Trans/Hyd oil or a good universal Trans/Hyd oil that meets the MF specs. The power steering does use the same oil as the Trans/Hyd uses.

Thanks guys. Thanks for the cross reference chart TomTX, that will be helpful. How about the filter locations?I was thinking that there was one that was kinda like a screen inside a resivour or something. Is this right? Any other preventive maint. things I should do before using it?

Thanks again Dale from N.C.

The hydraulic filter is loacted by your left heel, it's a big canister behind the PTO lever. It could be on there very tight, on ours (285, same tractor but a utility version) the dealer had to take the whole assembly off and put a little heat and a large pipe wrench on it to get it loose. Why it was that tight we don't know, we're the original owners.

There is the 1 hydraulic filter, 1 engine oil filter, 2 fuel filters, and there should be 2 air filters, one inside the other. Like Tom said, buy the manuals, atleast the owner/operator manual. Make sure you locate the grease zerk under the front end for the steering, among a few other zerks that aren't completly obvious.

Thanks guys for all your help.I really appreciate it. This is John Deere country where I'm at so, there's not much help here. I was on my own until I found you guys thanks again. I found the prevoius owner and he gave me the complete history on the tractor. He was the only owner, He even says he has all 3 manuals ( real Massey) he'll sell me for $50.

Thanks Dale in N.C.

Glad sharing my oil research helped out. Best thing you can invest in before you start all this preventive maintenance is a 3 volume set of manuals. Get real MF manuals, Operator Manual, Repair Manual, and Parts Manual. Best money you can spend, as you will save it back in avoiding needless, incorrect repairs. Good Luck. Tom
