TO35 running rough

After running out of fuel, my TO 35 started running rough under a load. I was spreading gravel. I'm thinking it's got some crud in the carb. Sound logical since it just started after I ran it almost dry and let it sit a week? Actually, I ran out then put in a bit to get it back in the barn, then it sat for a week.

Should I take the carb off and squirt some cleaner or run some through the tank or.....?

I'd start my checking the spark to eliminate that as a possibility. If you have a fat bluish spark, then I'd check the fuel delivery to the carb by holding a container under the carb, turning on the tank valve and removing the plug at the bottom of the carb. The fuel should gush out like a cow peein' on a flat rock, continuously, for at least 30 seconds. If it doesn't then check the filters in the fuel system. The one in the sediment bowl, the one in the carb fuel inlet elbow (the so called "secret filter")and the one on the top of the tank valve. Work back from the carb to the tank.

thanks. I know everyone says check the plugs but like i said this didn't just happen. it happened after i ran out of fuel. I'll check the carb, that's what I think it is too.

Yeah I hear you, but you'd be surprised how often the carburetor and fuel system gets blamed for what turns out to be an ignition system problem. The ignition check is so easy to do. It takes less than 5 minutes and can save a lot time. Just pull the wire from the center of the distributor cap, move the boot out of the way, hold near a good ground, turn on the key and try a start.Look for a fat bluish spark.(If it's orangey or yellowish, you have an ignition system problem. Gotta' be fat and bluish.) If it's a fat bluish spark that you see, it ain't the primary and secondary part of the ignition system that's the problem. You can do it with a spark plug wire also but you need to stick a paper clip or a bent wire in the plug boot to make contact with the plug wire.
You may be right and it will turns out to be the fuel supply. But I could have swore I had a fuel system/carb problem only to find out I had a problem with the ignition system. Now I always start out by checking the spark.
Keep this tip in mind if you ever have any other problems. Good Luck.
