Since early april we have been trying to get my grandfathers Massey 65 diesel started. I had last started it in mid december, it started hard, but did start and run. Someon had used it since, knew because dirt was left in bucket, which wasn't there in december. Tractor cranked weak at first, so i pulled and charged both batteries. Tractor would then crank strong but not start. No smoke out of stack. Sediment bowl looked dirt, so I pulled it and cleaned it up. Checked fuel flow out of tank, which was ok, but fuel smelled bad, almost like it was tainted with gasloine. Drained tank and bleed out lines until I had good fresh diesel to the pump. Cracked output lines to injectors, no fuel coming out of pump whatsoever. My Grandfather then decided to call out Massey dealer, but their guy said that he thinks it's the pump, but they would need to haul the tractor to their shop to r+r and send pump out to be rebuilt. He said no to having it towed to the shop and the guy left. My grandfather is losing the battle to cancer right now and I know he wants to see this tractor fixed, but can't physically do it himself anymore. Where can i find the information on where to set the engine up to take the pump out? I can pull the pump and take it somewhere to get rebuilt, I just need to know where to set the timing to pull it, and how to time it when I get it back in? Is there anyway to get a factory dealer service manual for this tractor anymore? Sorry for being long winded. The tractor will run on ether also. Thank you.

I would not pull the pump on this tractor. If you do not have MF Operator Manual, get one. Replace fuel filter(s) and EXACTLY follow all the bleeding procedures. Tom

Timing gears have marks which are lined up. There are several on the idler gear so be careful. Check with Big Dean for details.

Have you checked this?? The fuel inlet line to the
injection pump when removed from the pump has a
fine coned screen(very fine). Carefully clean this
and be sure system is for sure bled. If nec give
a very light sniff of starting fluid. You know
what-she may start. Good luck. The pumps don't
often fail in this way. Chuck

I doubt that that screen being clogged could be my issue, but won't rule it out. I have good fuel at both bleed screws on the pump, when using the hand pump on the r/s of the tractor. It will run on ether, but only long enought to burn what you squirted in. As i said, there is a chance that someone tampered with the tractor while my grandparents were in florida. I will check that screen next time I get up there though. Thanks, and keep the ideas coming.
