Hi Boss Hog
As promised some weeks ago, I've uploaded 2 photos of the winch mounted on my MF65. Don't know how to insert them directly into this post, so I uploaded them under the 'Tractor Photos' link on the LH of this page. Search for '1962 MF65' and you'll get them.

The winch is a very old unit, as you will see, but is very strong - more than enough to drag the tractor around sideways when i have it backed up against a stump for snigging.

cheers
David

Thanks for the pics.

That's kind of what I was thinking about building. But had thought about trying to come up with some sort of "spades" on the back that would dig into the ground and keep the thing from dragging the tractor backwards.

Here are the direct links to the pictures if anyone else is interested:

I like the idea of the 'spades' into the ground, but they'd have to be pretty substantial in my experience - the size of a grading blade or similar. THe winch will get a fair old force on it, which is what you want. I usually 'prop' the drawbar of the winch unit against a stump or rock. Also, if you have 'spades' into the ground I suspect you'd be able to just wind the tractor over the top of the spades - i.e. lift the front wheels up, and worse. I've found the best anchor point is actually right up at the level of the drawbar and winch drum - right in the line of pull.

Another little thing: My winch has a freewheel on the drum for pulling the cable out quickly. This is pretty much an essential feature if you are doing anything more than one-off occasional pulls. It's a very primitive design of freewheel, but works well. If you're interested, let me know: I can email photos and description.

Good luck
David
