I have a MF35 that I acquired from an estate sale. I have looked over many of these threads about the need for having mineral oil in the machine rather than regular 90W gear oil, hydraulic oil, etc. How can you tell the difference between mineral oil (GL1?) and the others?

I got my GL1 at NAPA. NAPA GL1 oil part number is 65-205. They had to order it but it only took one day.

Are you sure the MF35 needs GL1? I know the guys on the Ferguson board insist that the TE20s (the old gray ones) can be killed by GL5, but the 35 is a newer beast.

Rod, My MF35 owner's manual states very clearly "Refill with the recommended grade of straight mineral gear oil". Later in the same section/paragraph it says S.A.E. 90. C. T.

TSC sells a 90w mineral gear oil that fords from 39-52 used in the rear end/hyds.. etc.

NAPA makes a gl-1 90wt oil as well..

I don't know of any way to tell oil that is in the tractor apart. Your best bet is to change all the oil - get premium hydraulic fluid that states it replaces MF-1129 and MF-1129A. That way you know you have the right stuff, and most tractors need a change anyway. The transmission, differential, and hydraulic are all the same oil on this tractor. Remove the left inspection cover below the seat, and take out the screen. Clean it and put it back in, wiring it in place as it was. Power steering uses the same oil as the transmission. The MF-35 is a great tractor - enjoy!
