MF 20 / 135 Differential Lock question.

Hello,
I"ve recently purchased a MF 20. From what I"ve read it is the industrial version of the 135.

My question is about the differential lock.
It has the small pedal on the right side, which is connected to a pipe that runs from the differential housing to the hub or brake housing inside the rear wheel.

The pedal doesn"t seem to do anything when pressed. The pedal goes down very easy and seems like it might not be connected properly.

I am wondering how to check if the pedal is actually doing anything to lock the differential.

I"ve read that the 2 problems people have with these is the gears get stripped from improper use and the lever gets stuck.

I just don"t know how to check it or how much pressure it should take to push the pedal.

I"d appreciate any advice anyone could offer on this problem.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, On my 35, once it is depressed, it stays down until I reach down and pull it up. I don't know if that is how it is supposed to work. Also, I have read on this forum to not step on it with the wheel turning, because you could break the axel. It did get me out of a bind a couple of times. I was mowing in a bar ditch and I stopped the tractor and one wheel was off of the ground. Stepped on it, normal throttle and continued mowing. C. T.

Mike, I have used the lock on my 35 and if you push it down, then drive the tractor forward slowly and turn the steering wheel, it will not steer properly. With both rears turning, it is very difficult to steer. That's the easiest way to check it. C. T.

I finally had some time to work with my mf 20 last night.

The differential lock seems to help with not letting one tire spin. And, occasionally after using it, it seemed to be locked in where it is hard to steer.

When I need to use it, do I just step on the pedal once and it is activated, or do I need to keep my foot on it to keep it activated?

I definitely noticed a difference when trying to scoop up some dirt. When I wasn't using the lock, I would get to a certain point and a tire would start spinning. With the lock, it seems more likely the tractor will bog down since it is not able to turn the wheels.

Thanks for all the replies to my original query. It has been helpful.

Mike

I had a MF35 with the same problem. Unfortunately, the differential gears inside had all the teeth busted off. And some of the pieces had found their way into the wheel bearing.

Cost me over $1,000 to get fixed.

So are the gears that would need replacing inside the center differential housing?

I've replaced the ring gear and pinion in a 640 ford 2 years ago. So I've got a bit of experience with what is probably inside the housing.

I should probably look for a good manual with parts diagram.

Thanks for any further help anyone could offer.

I wasn't the one who took mine apart - The dealer did. And it was several years ago.

But if I recall correctly, they had the tractor split and had the right axle housing off.

Jack up one rear wheel, with the remaining wheels scotched for safty, release the parking brake. With the tractor out of gear get a assistant to push the pedal down while you turn the jacked up wheel. With the diff lock working the wheel should lock, The force requred to operate the pedal is not great.
