I made some adjustments yesterday to my MF 65 gas motor. Set the idle to proper RPM and the timing to right setting. Changed plugs today they where carbon fouled. If the plug gap was too narrow would this cause the carbon fouling? The gap on all the plugs seemed to be a couple of thousandths narrow.

If it's not burning oil but still carbon fouling with the engine properly tuned and getting the right mixture, it could likely have too 'cold' a plug for the work you're doing with it. In that case, plugs with a higher heat range help solve this.

I doubt that the carbon fouling was from the gap setting. Your gaps ought to be something like 0.025" or 0.030 ". If the fouling is wet and oily, you have a problem with oil control rings and possibly worn compression rings. If the fouling was a dry, sooty type fouling, that's a mixture problem;too rich. Lean out you carb a bit, but don't overdo it or you can eventually burn the valves. Follow the instructions in the shop manual or owners manual. If you don't have one, you ought to consider getting them. Get the factory ones. They're usually reproduction but they contain a lot of valuable info.
