Getting one and wanted to know how strong it is. Guy we are getting it from says it will work fine for pulling stumps up to 12" thick. True?

We have about 47 acres (using only about 8 right now). It will involve stump removal (usually nothing bigger than 3 or 4" thick), garden plowing, snow plowing, and pulling loggs for firewood, and I guess anything else we can do :)

I have been looking and see the max hp for pulling seems to be about 22hp. That is with weighted tires.

I also hope their easy to work on since Im not a genius but can usually get by if I know what is wrong and it is mainly mechanical.

By the way we are in central maine.

Thank you
Michael

Your Massey Harris 22 is a fine tractor on the smallish side for what it sounds like you want to do. I would keep the stumps to 3" max and would hook the chain way down low (below the center line of the rear axles). As far as log skidding, it will surprise you what the 22 can do. You do have to be careful about snagging up on stumps when skidding logs or the tractor can flip over. I snow plow with a rear blade as well. As far as plowing, you are looking at a 1 bottom plow tractor, especially when first breaking ground that hasn't been used before.

I sure have had a lot of fun and done a lot of work in the process with my 22. Common parts are generally available at Napa or Carquest. It is an easy tractor to work on. I think you will be pleasantly surprised (if not downright amazed) at what it can do. Have fun and be careful.

Anyone that says that a model 20 will pull 12" stumps is having a bad dream in my estimation. Putting aside that argument, go over to the tractor talk forum and ask about pulling 12" stumps and you'll get a lot of feedback from guys who really know their stuff (which wouldn't include myself). Maybe mention the model 20 while you are at it but that really isn't the problem, it's the stump-pulling itself that will raise some eyebrows. Although I guess a lot will depend on the type of tree and it's rooting system as well as the type of soil you are working in, most experienced people will probably recommend against doing it. A good number of people ended up in a pine box doing this very thing from what I've heard. Good luck with your project.

It will pull like an 8n or better, but not 12 inch stumps unless you do a lot of root cutting first. I bought mine in '76 when an ice storm filled my driveway with downed trees, so I know it can move logs! Do not put a loader on as frame will not take it. MIne has big tires on back and makes it very high geared, fine for road work. 3 point is great, with fast reactions and power down is a big asset.
