My brother in law"s diesel 165 is blowing exhaust out of the valve cover vent all of the time. The last time he mowed for about 2 hours and then it started blowing puddles of oil out the vent. After it cooled off we started it back up, no oil. Anybody have any ideas?

Time to perform a compression test. Write down for each cylinder. Add tablespoon of oil to cylinder and repeat the test. Write down again. compare. Analyze difference among cylinders, and change with the oil added. This will let you know if rings are worn out, if one cylinger is bad, etc. May be time for a rebuild. Tom

Yes it starts hard when its cold, but not bad after it warms up. I"ve also got a 165 and his doesn"t start as good as mine.
