Hello . Have a question reguarding the MF 500s . It is only recent have ever known that they came in two wheel bases , obviously long and short . My question is ; am I right in asuming that the long wheel base were for four wheel drive only and short wheel base just for two wheel drive , or were both available in both ? While on the suject i know that the 590 came in long wheel base and am asuming that the 575 did . Obviously the 550 would only have been in short whell base and two wheel drive ; but what about the 565 ? Finally , were these long wheel base versions available right from the start of production ? As for the french built 595 i take it that was only made in the one wheel base reguardless as the whether it was two or four whell drive . Looking at them I would say that the 590 was probably nearly as long when in long whel base . Thanks . David Broad [email protected]

Yes there are long and short wheel bases, dont know where the difference in length is but can remember repairing a tractor when I worked for a M-F dealer in the UK and getting the wrong Bonnet (Hood) , there were long and short 600 series too, maybe differences between Coventry and French production? Would be interesting to know.

Hello David,
Interesting point. Are you sure that there are two wheelbase lengths? I have looked through my 500 Series info dating back to the time of the launch in the UK and cannot find anything other than the small difference in wheelbase between 2 and 4WD.
As you may know a spacer is fitted between the gearbox and centre housing which acts as the drive point for the front axle in 4WD. This was added to the '8-line' (148,168,188 built at Banner Lane. Due to the different axle arrangement for 4WD the axle casting has to be longer so increases the wheelbase by around 3 inches. In the case of the 595 I believe the same length casting is used, hence the longer bonnet as with the 590 and 575 4WD. The 2WD 595 also has the large steering assembly in front of the radiator.
There was no 4WD option with the MF565 or 550. As you may also know MF did offer a 4WD version of the 250 and slightly larger 265 in the UK. I would be very interested to know if there were any other wheelbase versions for other countries possibly without cabs?
Regards
DavidP
