Hey guys I just put about 50% down on a 1085 Diesel of early 1980's vintage. Can anyone tell me a little bit about this machine? Good, bad or ugly.... Any history, websites etc. I drove it around, checked the 3 pt hitch, draft, PTO, remotes sounded like they worked ok. The 4 cylinder perkins fired right up just like a perkins should. I'll probably pay the rest of the money soon and I plan to put it to work running an auger, bush hog, bailer etc

thanks, Dale

lol, when i ment "hard" i ment running a 260 chopper all day long, full throttle and not having enough power to run quite at 540 pto. That's what i ment by hard, head gasket every year, rings on top of that every second untill we traded for a bigger tractor more suited for what we really needed, maybe i should have said heavily abused instead of hard, lol. If we used it more for what type of jobs it was designed for we would have had better luck, phill

Thanks guys. When you say multishift what exactly is that? This one has 3 forward gears with a high and low range. By the way, what is the little round knurled "pedal" on the right side of the floorboard that looks like you would probably operate it with the heal of your right boot?....It almost sits right below the seat. Anyone else? What is the country of origin?

Thanks again Dale

We run a 285, the utility version of the same tractor. The pedal you refer to is for the differential lock. Iff it hasn't been used much it'll be stiff and hard to get out, which will make turns very hard. All you gotta do is pry it up and it'll be fine.

The multi-power they refer to is a shifter on the dash on the left kinda under the steering wheel. They free wheel in low, so don't shift to lo while going down a hill. We've had no problems shifting ours under loads, and we work that massey hard (atleast we used to) pulling the plow, doing the heavy tillage and hauling wagons. The 285 is great for baling. The 1085 I could see being a little more clumsy, but it should still be ok.

Those Perkins are great engines, ours has 6100 un-touched hours on it. It is starting to slobber some, but you would too after that many hours doing hard labor. I think it'll get hooked to the plow this spring some to clear up some carbon.

Hi Dale,we had a 1085 years ago.If you are using it for what you say you are,you should be ok.We worked ours very hard and had alot of trouble with it. If you could cut the hp down to 65-70,you will eliminate most of the problems that we had with ours, which would be lots for what you said you need it for.On that note, they are very easy on fuel which is very important today and are really pretty nice to use.If it has a multipower, make sure not to shift it under a load as they are pretty light and expensive to fix. Just rember to work it fairly light and you will be happy with your purchace.phill

I love my 1085. It is a very comfortable driving and riding tractor. These tractors had a head gasket problem ( replacing head bolts took care of). I have had it 15 years, replace the sleeves, pto clutches, eng. clutch, press. plate, throw out bearing, and auxillary hyd. pump. Parts are getting hard to get. I would suggest that if you have to do work with it in tall straw, that you attach a cable or small chain to the dipstick as these will get pulled out easy and a new one is $65.

Another thing, when you said it had head gasket problems, but that swapping head bolts was the trick, what was the problem? Kinda sounds like maybe the bolts were too long and were bottoming out before they fully torqued the head down in place. Was that the case? I think I really hit the jackpot of knowlege here!! You guys are the best thanks. By the way, check my other reply just below my first post.( I replied in the wrong place.) Sorry.

Thanks guys Dale

Thank you very much guys. It sounds like the tractor should be ok as long as I dont try and make it do something it wasn't intended to do. If I do have problems I'll let you know. By the way, I found this website if anone is interested.....

Thanks again,
