Is it common for an engine that is under load to make a pinging sound if it's in the wrong gear? If not could the timing be a little off or maybe just needs a tune up?

Thanks
Steve

Or you could be using REG. Unleaded gas, Which does not have enough octane, try using Premium!

Your timing may be too advanced, your mixture maybe too lean, your plugs may be too hot, or you may have some carbon in the combustion chambers.

Higher number equals hotter plug, correct?
Does anyone know the proper plug for a contential 176 engine? I checked at a local farm store and the book they had there gave me four different plugs to choose from. Is this something that has to be figured out by trial and error?

Depends on who makes the plug.

The plugs I was looking at were Champion, but it doesn't matter to me who makes the plug just that it's right. I did look at the plugs that are in it now today. They are champion D21. The chart that I looked at said D10, D12, D14 or D16.
