Strange Oil Level

I have a 255 Diesel that I love and it runs great but there is one really strage "feature".

When I go out and check the oil in the morning it is dead even with the fill line. After running it for a couple hours and stopping to check the oil it is significantly ABOVE the fill line. Even if I let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes.

The first time it happend it scared me, I thought maybe it was getting antifreeze of hydraulic fluid in the oil. However the radiator is still clean and green and hydraulic fluid shows no traces of oil.

When I put it back in the shed and night and come out the next morning it is back to regular level.

I have put about 40 hours planting with this tractor the last 4 days and the pattern has been repeating.

It doesn't seem to be hurting anything but I sure am baffled. It that normal behavior for those Perkins?

Sounds like its caused by heat expansion of the oil. Or in other words when the oil gets hot it expans and of course it will look like its a little fuller then it was when cold. I don't think I would worry about it if when you check it the next morning its at the full mork, but if it ever gets to where its over full by say a qt. then I would worry about it. In that case you could have a problem with the injector pump etc.

I have run across this before but it was because they were pulling the dipstick after the engine has been run and not wiping the dipstick and rechecking the level. Just thought I would check to see if this might be what you are doing.

No, I have been wiping it well before reinserting and checking. I'm pretty naive sometimes but not that bad ;)
