Considering an MF 35

I have found a fella who has an MF 35 with a loader for sale. It is a 1965 model with a 3 cyl Perkins diesel. The paint and sheet metal is nice, and the engine is very clean, with what looks to be origional light gray paint. he wants about 7000 Cdn. for it.
Is that engine a good choice, and are there obvious things to watch out for? I noticed a sort of yellowish stain along and below the joint where the crank case meets the block. No signs of oil or residue though, but the engine was very clean.

It is being sold by a gentleman who has many older tractors on his yard for sale, and says that this one as recently come in, and he has done nothing with it. He says that a dealership recently went over the entire tractor including clutch adjustment and that he has the bill to show it.

The engine started easily and sounded very good as it idled. I have yet to take a real close look at it.

Any comments?

Thanks, Peter

Peter, The MF 35 with three cylinder engine is a truly great tractor. Did you know Perkins made this engine until recently, as it was such a good engine?!. The three cylinder Perkins was the best starting engine ever in the 35 range, in good shape it should go on forever. Apart from the engine, the tinwork is also of great importance. If in good condition, the tractor is a good investment, it is difficult to get good original tinwork and very expensive to buy new reproductions. I say buy it and enjoy.

Not sure what the exchange rate is these days but that sounds a tad steep, unless tractors in general are dear in your area.

Also, it kind of depends on what you would want it for.

If you can get a disinterested, qualified second opinion on the thing to say that it's in good shape, then it would be a handy smaller tractor.

Gas engines do tend to start easier in cold weather.
