Been working on a MH 30 and need a few ideas on what might be wrong. At this point any ideas would be helpful. Heres what it does. It runs good and the trottle works good from idle to full but, and heres the big one. It will only run with the main jet out of the carb. If you so much as put your finget over the hole the mani jet goes in it will die. I've been in the carb 2 or 3 times and I'm almost sure its clear and working as it should but not sure. What do you guys think might be wrong, intake manifold?? Carb still or some thing else. Thanks

Is the bowl vent clogged? That's my best guess.

Old, what kind of carb is it? an M-S, Carter, etc. Is what you are calling the main jet, the nozzle/emulsifier tube that goes into the venturi? Or do you really mean the main jet, a little brass screw with a hole drilled in it? If it's the latter than perhaps you have the wrong size jet for this engine. The same goes for the main nozzle/emulsifier tube. Make sure the emulsifier holes are clear and that the nozzle you are using is correct for your engine size. You said that there were some problems with the venturi in a previous post. Are you sure that you have the right venturi. If it has too big a throat area, then the pressure in the throat will be too high and you won't get enough fuel to have the right fuel air ratio. If you want to use a venturi that's too big, you'll have to a bigger jet and possibly an larger emulsifier tube/nozzle. Make sure that the pressure balancing passage that connects in the air inlet side of the of the carburetor to the fuel bowl is clear.
With out having more info on the carb you are using, this is about all I can offer.

Its a M-S carb. Whats funny is this carb was on another engine that blew up, but it did run and that was with out the venturi or gasket in the carb, but it ran till it blew #2 piston clear out and I do mean clear out as in its gone. As far as what I'm calling the main jet I should cll it the main jet adjusting screw. With it out it runs good, with it in it will not run. I know what I would try but can't seem to find a gasket. I would change the manifold, since it worked on the other engine but not this one. The manifold on this one has been welded where the carb mounts and I'm thinking that is where the problem might be.

If the carb is an M-S, there should be a drilled passage in the upper casting in air inlet that goes to the fuel bowl and vents the bowl to the air inlet to make the carb metering insensitive to a partially clogged air filter. Make sure that passage is clear.

I have a ham radio friend who was telling me the other day about one of his green machines, he was telling me about the carb, and that the one jet adjusted air flow, not gas, he had a similar problem and found something plugged up, he said after a guy east of us in Wisconsin told him about it he saw it in the green magazine, the carb on your tractor is made by the same company, so maybe the air can"t get through where it is supposed to, like Bob"s tractor, and it getts in when you take the jet out, I haven"t got a chance to look at mine yet, when he first had the problem it really blew me out of the water, I never knew that...
