Have an MF50 that i only use occasionally. Was pulling a disc the other day when it just died - felt like it ran out of gas or lost ignition - rather sudden. Thought it was out of gas so i put some gas in but would not start. After plugs and new coil it started. Still died after a while. I cleaned the sediment bowl and drained the carb - and checked the line to make sure no blockage. Still died - and could only restart by moving throttle up and down. I had been pulling the disc in 3rd (low). Started pulling in second (low) did not die after that.

Any ideas?

Dave,

One problem that is quite pervasive and covers all the brands of tractors using a Marvel-Schebler carburetor.

There is a screen in the inlet fitting that looks like an elbow. The gas line connects to it and goes into the carburetor. Take out that fitting and you will find an integral screen. Often this screen will get clogged and is easily overlooked. If you remove the gas line and check it for flow it will be alright. What will drive you nuts is that it will run great then die. Let it set for a little bit and it will start and go like nothing happened until you deplete the fuel in the bowl.

Blow out the carburetor and fuel lines with compressed air. I've saved many a carb rebuilds this way on cars and tractors.

One other thing to check out the next time it happens. Take the coil wire off and check for good spark. Sometimes, however seldom, the coil will get hot and the windings will open. When it cools off it starts up and runs until it gets hot again.

Check it out.

"...Dirt. Dirt in the fuel line. Just blowed 'er out."
