The shaft coming out of the power steering cylinder, which provides resistance for the cylinder to steer with, has broken at the point where the pin goes through it. We need to get the cylinder out of the tractor, but I am having not much luck. I have ordered the shop manual, but it wont be here for a few weeks, and I am wondering if anyone would be willing to give a bit of detailed information on how to remove a power steering cylinder from a MF 165. The only thing Ive been able to disconnect is the actuator arm, while the bolts connecting the cylinder to the steering arm are completely hidden behind the arm.

thanks,

Robin

I removed the cylinder on a 1964 MF65 last year as follows: Remove the grills and center grill support. Turn the steering wheel to the extreme left and leave it there. Might need to tie steering wheel. Remove four bolts that hold bracket on right side of cyl. Remove hyd lines at top of cyl. Remove pin in the adjust linkage. If pins have wear replace them with new pins to get better adjustment. Remove two bolts on left end of cyl that holds large pin. On left end of cyl drive pin down. I also had the bottom nose cover off. The cyl can be removed without taking off crank arm on bottom. If you take this arm off be sure to mark both part so you can get it installed correctly. Otherwise the steering will not trun enough one direction. The dealers still can get a seal kit on the cyl I had. I also found out from Big Dean that the proper fluid is hyd oil not auto trans fluid.

Disconnect the ball joints on the lower arm, either on the arm or at the outsides. Slacken the pinch bolt securing the top bracket to the main pin, knock a cold chisel into the split and tap the main shaft down with a copper hammer, don't burr the top over. You will now be able to remove the broken ram and bracket, slacken the two pinch bolts to remove the pin holding the bracket to the ram. The ram head pin can be a problem if the threaded portion at the top is missing. Remove the split pin. If it is present, use a stack of 16mm washers and a 1/2"UNC nut to extract the pin. If not good luck with the gas axe! You should be able to get a rod made locally. It is worth replacing the entire linkage while it is apart as it only takes a little wear to make the power steering poor.

You'l have to remove the arm off the bottom of the drop shaft, and lift the shaft arms and ram out as one piece
