The 6 volt starter will take 12 volts no problem. I've been doing this with my Masseys for a long time with no problems. It may cost a little more than pulling an alternator off of a car, but having your generator rewound for 12 volt negative ground makes for a seamless conversion. No trading pulleys or fabricating brackets, and it retains the stock appearance. I had mine done for about $180 out the door with new bushings and regulator.

I have converted mine and it works good. Of course you'll need a 12 volt battery, 12 volt coil (either an internally resisted one of you'll need to get a ballast resistor) and alternator or 12 volt gen. Possibly a little fabrication or enginuity for the mounting braket. Probably different cables because chances are you'll be switching from pos. ground to neg. One thing to watch is, on my massey, the main belt is pretty wide and won't fit on a standard alternator pulley. I put the old gen. pulley on the alternator and it is ok but with one exception. The diameter is bigger so it doesn't turn the alt. as fast as normal. It works ok but the tractor has to run at fast idle a brief time before the alt. excites. Works fine though. Also remember that if you use an older 2 wire alt. you'll need a little bulb or something like a pressure switch to excite the alt. and prevent battery drain. They are a little more $ but a newer one wire alt. eliminates this step and is a lot easier. Don't take this info as a deterant. It's actually pretty simple. Hope it helps

A six volt starter will work fine, just don't ever heat it up by running it for more than 15 seconds at a time. You shouldn't need to: most starts are very quick with a fast-turning six/12 starter.

My MH30 seems hard on bendix drive springs after the conversion, but the starter on my Chrysler M47 marine engine has worked flawlessly for 21 years on 12 volt.
