Could someone walk me through, step by step, the procedure for adjusting the valves on my 1949 Massey Harris Pony? Thanks.

Do you have the special tool you need to do it? If you look in the original service manual for the pony you will see it, they have the exact size and everything on how to make it. So I made one in the machine shop. Place that tool in there, it will hold the lifters from turning while you try to tighten it up a little. Start by looseing the lower nut and then turn the top screw to tighten it to the value/spring. The lifter needs to be in the all the way down position before doing this, so make sure to hand turn the engine tell the lifter goes down as far as it can. I had such slop in my lifter that the roto cap fell off the end of the valve. Since then we have all new valves and rebuilt the engine.

So to recap:
1.Get the tool, or make one that will hold the lifter from turning while you turn the nuts.

2. Turn the engine by hand or crank tool (make sure ignition is off!) tell the lifter is at it"s lowest point. Then looseing the lower nut (bigger one) and then turn the top nut (smaller one) tell it comes up to the lifter (there is a set gap that needs to be there using a fuller gauge to measure it. I am not sure what the gap needs to be).

3. Do all 8 lifters the same way and that should do it.
