Below are three images of what I found when I pulled the brakes on my 65. The actuator on the left top picture is not only rough, but pitted. My question is whether you can or if it makes any sense to resurface these or do I just replace the whole unit. I am also concerned about the surface inside the trumpet housing, which is rough but not nearly to the extent of the actuator. Is there anything I can do with that, or should I just sand it smooth as I can and make do? Randy

Randy, If the acctuators or discs are worn or machined down too far, the brakes will jam on hard as the acctuators expand out too far as the five balls inbetween the plates roll out, then you have to reverse the tractor to release the brake. I would only sand the trumpet housing lightly. Cheers.

I would agree with Sibby. If you can't sand them to get a finish, bin them. Any material that is removed will have to be compensated for by the discs opening wider to contact the discs. There is a real risk of then jamming on then. They will be quite expensive but you don't have much choice

I was told that resurfacing is not possible. The total movement of the brake is .044" and any cut would reduce that. I lightly sandblasted mine, perhaps you can do the same? My actuators were not rusted as bad as built up with dust and grease. My axle housing was showing wear, but without replacing the axle trumpet there is nothing I can do. It looks like that brake disc was frozen on the axle. I am not sure how to prevent the disc from freezing. I tried dry graphite lube on all surfaces except the friction surfaces, but time will tell if that worked or not.

Now I have a question for you. Where does the brake return spring mount? I do not remember what stud the spring was mounted to. Thanks in advance, Aaron

This is where mine was mounted. Hope it helps. On the actuator, I went ahead and ordered one and will work on sanding the trumpet surface a little bit
