I have a MF2200 industrial with a Z134 engine, when I checked the oil the other day it seemed a little too thin and smelled like it had gas in it. It does sit for extended periods of time and is not used that often. Any ideas what could be causing that and what I should do? Thanks, Mark.

Ramman:

This is a common problem with gravity flow fuel systems when you do not shut the fuel off after use. If the float/needle valve sytem in the carburetor does not seal correctly every time gasoline will flow past the valve overfilling the float bowl.

Updraft carburetors for gravity flow systems were built with a bronze filter/plug in the bottom of the air horn to allow excess gasoline to drip onto the ground. If, as is common on old equipment, this plug is gummed up or otherwise plugged, and the air filter hose is securely connected and in good condition, the excess gasoline will fill up the intake manifold and eventually run into the cylinders through open intake valves. Once in the cylinders, it will flow past the rings into the crankcase.

The remedy is to shut off the fuel after use and/or overhaul the carburetor.

If your tractor has a fuel pump the diaphragm may have a hole in it

There is no fuel pump, the fuel tank is on top of the engine. And I'm assumeing an updraft carb since the carb is below the intake manifold. Any ideas would be appreciated. Mark.

It happens.... I suspect mine was because they forgot to put the rotor button back on and tried to start it. My brothers mf50 did it and we never did figure out why. We just changed the oil out. If anyone else has figured out what would cause this on an updraft carb/intake please let me know. Aaron
