Which tractor should I buy?

I've never owned a tractor bigger than a 12hp lawn tractor. I'm looking for something to hang onto for a while that will ultimately be used to mow a couple of acres and plow snow, but will initially be used to strip topsoil and spread/grade stone (building a driveway and house, may eventually have horses). Some options available locally (Central NY state) are a MF210 with 800hrs (approx. 1980) for $3k that should mow fine, but I'm not confident it's heavy/powerful enough for earthwork. A MF135 (approx. 1965) is being offered with about 4500hrs at $4500 that seems plenty big enough, but maybe a bit pricey given the hrs/age. I'm also considering a Mahindra E350 (2000) with 130hrs for $6500, though it's a little more $ than I want to spend and I'm not sure how it will hold up against a tried and tested name like MF, even though the other tractors are older. All three tractors are diesel, two-wheel-drive with 3-point hitch and PTO, available from a local farmer who sells tractors on the side, and appear to be in good shape (Mahindra obviously appears newer than the others). Any feedback/discussion and other suggestions are helpful and appreciated. Thanks!

Your situation seems similar to mine. I too would like to find a tractor to remove topsoil and spread stone for my 300’ driveway (building house), plus snow plowing and some small woodlot work. Just wondering what equipment you finally decided on, and how things worked out? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would go with the Mirhindra over that 135, it is way too expensive for something that size and old, for $2000 more for a new tractor, definitley. The Mirhindra is a good solid tractor. You may consider buying a much bigger older tractor for that price also, especially if you are planning on moving dirt, ani't gonna move much with a 135.

Hi.

I would most definately go for the MF 135, it runs on air and love (very cheap on fuel) and is one of the most reliable tractors you will ever find. Easy to find parts for, and the parts are cheap too.
The 3 cylinder Perkins diesel is the most common diesel engine in the world today. No other engine has been built in such numbers and over so many years as this engine. If you want to kill it you need TNT or dynamite.

I think it was last year there was a contest of what tractor had been most popular over the years in Norway, and MF 135 won.

I can of course not say if the MF 135 you have been offered is good or bad, worn out or have little wear, but a MF 135 who has been well taken care of is a long lasting piece of machinery.

Thanks, everyone, for all of the useful feedback. I appreciate the offer on the gas TO35, but I'm in the market for something diesel. This appears to be a nice, friendly forum, and I intend to participate more down the road.

One way to get an idea of prices in your area is Ebay. There are MANY tractors on there in MANY different conditions. If you watch there for a while on the types of tractors you are looking for you get a pretty good idea what they SELL for in a particular condition. There are many "asking" prices posted on the net but knowing selling prices is helpful if you are concerned about its real market value. In my experience, CONDITION is a LARGE factor in value old or new. I have never bought one on there but have bought a couple off this site. Both good condition and fair value. Good luck.

All I can say is if you want to "use" a tractor I would stick with something a little newer. Its nice to have poer stearing, live PTO,etc. Some of the older ones will get the job done, but if you want production go newer. I love the older tractors, but they can be hard to work with.

It sounds like all the tractors you mentioned are quite pricey for what they are. Maybe tractors in your part of the country bring more money than out west where I live. I think I would look around for a while if you're not in a hurry.
