1967 MF35 diesel, when the key is turned, I just get a clunk from the starter. Starter bench tested OK, new battery cables, and recharged battery - turned over normally for first 6 or 7 tries, now I'm back to just the clunk. When I jump the terminals on the solenoid, I get sparks but no turnover. All connections seem good, but the wires are old. New solenoid and wiring harness the next step??
thanks

Thanks for the help. I think it was cables and batt. New cables and new battery working now.

Recheck the battery. Sounds like a dead cell. The battery will charge but does not have enough amps to turn the engine over. A battery can have 12 volts but you still need amps to run the starter.

thanks,
I think connections are good. Wiring itself is suspect.( Alot of crimp connections in line, different gauges, brittle...) Haven't been able to find a replacement harness. I&T manual doesn't discuss wiring. Anyone know if the MF Service Manual has good diagram and gauge requirements?

Matt:

A poor connection in the battery/solenoid/starter circuit can cause the symptoms that you describe as can dirty or worn starter brushes. I suggest a thorough cleaning/tightening of all connections before looking at the starter. Be sure to verify that all wiring is sufficiently large for the load.
