Need some advice on the Marvel Schebler carb on my MF135. I rebuilt the carb recently but the engine still has a tendency to sputter a little. The idle mixture adjustment has to be screwed all the way in to get a smooth idle, however, I have to screw it back out some for it to run half decent under a full load. Engine sputters at idle or at full load (or both) no matter how I adjust the mixture screws. Just cant get it completely adjusted out. I have checked for possible air leaks around the carb and intake. Partial choke has no effect. Engine has new plugs, points, condenser, dist. cap, wires and coil. Good fuel flow to carb. What am I missing here? Is there something else I need to check? Thanks for any advice.

Yes, those Schebler carbs can be a bit strange. The adjustments just do not seem to do too much sometimes. I've experienced the same problem. One possible problem is that there are some very small openings that you cannot see unless you remove the main fuel nozzle (which I suggest that you don't even think of doing or you'll end up with the nozzle in 2 pieces, one part in the carb and the other one in your deep socket). Some of these tiny openings are in the nozzle, deep down inside, and there are at least 2 in the casting around the nozzle (inside and invisible), one near the top and the other down lower. I'm not sure how a guy can guarantee that they are open. I have been told by a carb man how to get the fuel nozzle out and if you want to email me at: [email protected] - I will tell you what he said. I had a similar problem with a little Massey 101 jr here for 2 years. I fiddled with that carb until I could take it apart in my sleep and eventually found out that one of my 'new' plugs was not up to par and was very often not firing (for whatever reason). It must have been bad from the factory, and I was having to use the choke very often to keep the thing running decent. For sure, it's either fuel delivery or ignition, but I guess that's not much help.
