I am posting for a friend of mine who has a massey 1085. The lift rises as soon as he starts the engine...with a jerky motion it travels to the highest point and stays there till he shuts the tractor off. Moving the control lever does nothing to change this. Whats the first thing to consider checking?

first off a MF1085 will probably have pressure control if it does the position lever inside lever works backwards from most tractors. You pull it toward the back to lower the lift. If he has had the tractor a while he would all ready know this. Beside that it Either it has something broke in the control linkage, The adjustment has slipped or the control valve is stuck. Drain the oil down to just below the bottom bolt for the access plate on the right side of the rear center housing. Remove that access plate look inside you will see a lever hanging down from the top and two small levers with a roller between them sticking up from the pump. Move the quadrant Draft and position handles and watch the levers to see if the one with the roller moves. If not push the roller forward you should feel a spring trying to pull it toward the back if not the control valve is stuck if the valve is not stuck when you push the roller forward the lift should lower. In that cace it is something in the linkage causing the problem.
