I have heard that if the dynamo does not charge the battery it might be that the dynamo has lost it's magnetism an you could get it back if you run it as a motor.
If this is true how can I connect it so it will run an as a motor.

A few years back, I had a Massey 50 that wouldn't charge for love nor money. I spent all sorts of time with it. Finally started "throwing parts at it". Rebuilt generator. New volt. reg. Complete re-wire. The list went on. Finally found the culprit---- Burnt shunt in voltmeter.(Or was that an ampmeter?) Anyway, Replaced the gauge and away we went.

Try repolarizing it. Is it a-circuit or B circuit. If not sure, flip over the regulator and look for a bias resistor. The a-circuit jobs will have a bias resistor from ground tab to field tab. the B circuit jobs will have a bias resistor fron fieled tab to arm tab. ( may have others present as well ).

A circuit polarizes by jumpering bat to arm

B circuit polarizes by jumpering bat to field.

If it's a sealed regulator (like a lucas!! ), you can try to motor it by disconnecting the regulator.. hook bat to arm. then ground the field.. if it spins.. it is A-circuit... If it doesn't spin, instead, hook bat also to field.. if that makes it spin.. it's b-circuit.

Don't overlook the obvious things like worn brushes, bad wires, bad regulator, loose belt. All of these things can make it not charge.

Hi michael

Don't know about that!! If you have had the Battery or other electrical components disconected you probably need to Polarize the Dynamo, Have you tried that ?

Regards, JJ.

David

Dynamo is the common terminology for the Generator in the UK and most of Europe. If you need to know the procedure for polarizing the Generator/Dynamo search this site, type in "polarizing a Generator" you will find volumes written on the subject.
