Re: MF65 External Hydraulic - PTO pump in reply to Jerry Woodring, 03-23-2006 12:11:38
Depending on what other type of work you do with the tractor a PTO mounted pump that was mentioned earlier may be a good option. Surplus Center, a mail-order outfit out of Lincoln Nebraska, is a good source for hydraulic components. They have PTO pumps up to 22.4 gpm at 2000 psi for $359. You can also get a splined extension to put on your regular PTO that runs through the pump and out the other side so that you can still run something else like a mower or manure spreader with the PTO. It isn't ideal but it may be faster and cheaper than getting a front mounted pump coupled on. It can also have a lot more capacity than the internal hydraulic pump.

Look at www.surpluscenter.com but ask them to send you a paper catalog.

You can install a diverter valve in place of the transfer cap on top if the liftcover in front of the seat and use the three point to operate the loader with. It will be slow raising that way and you have to switch the diverter from remote hydraulics to three point. You cannot use both at the same time. You can use a front pump that is driven by the crankshaft pulley but as Jerry said but you do need a special steering that is no longer available for that. I have been told you can use the upper spindle arms from a late model also but have never saw that done so not sure if it will work or not. If I can be of further help email me.

Hm... on my UK MF 65 I can use a pump in front of the tractor, a long shaft from the end of the crankshaft to the front... never thought it would interfere with any steering parts... I have to take a look at that in the weekend.

Jerry,

If you want external hydraulics you will have to add a control valve to your tractor. At one time there were two valves to chose from, available at Massey dealers. One valve was for single or one-way operation, the other valve produced double or two-way hydraulics.

Another option would be a P.T.O. driven pump. It would probably provide more gallons per minute and make your loader operate much faster than the pump that is in your tractor now.

A front mount pump is yet another thing to consider but I have heard you need a special steering arm to provide clearance for the drive shaft.

Whatever you decide I would suggest checking the condition of the bushings on your front axle. Loaders are rough on front ends. The 65 has thin bushings on the pivot pin anyway. I would guess the new ones to be no thicker than 1/16 of an inch. I can tell you from experience that when the pin wears through the bushing and into the casting they are no fun to weld up and re-machine.

Good Luck !
