Found a MF 65 to buy but have some ?

Had a quick look at a MF 65 gas The guy is wanting $3500 for it.
First off this guy seem to be a wheeler dealer having lots of adds in the paper regularly. There were over a dozen tractors of all types in the barn.

Well the 65 started right up there were no sine of leaks ran smooth no smoke.
The paint was new. I know you can put lipstick on a sow but that doesnt mean you want to date it : )

The power steering did not come on line right it turned a little left and right more of a jerk but never really turned . Guy clamed it work the other day . Right ; )

So here is the question Are power steering problems common on the MF 65 s Would this be a deal killer?

I know I am dealing with old iron but dont want to get stuck with some ones problem child. There was all so some seepage a round the PTO shaft.

I didnt have time to drive it or check hydraulics planning to go back Friday.

Many thanks for any tips and advice

I had an early 65 diesel. The Power Steering was out on it, but you can adjust the steering to compensate. Also on mine, I had to replace most of the steering knuckles, and one of the spindles/ I think maybe the previous owner may have misplaces his grease gun.

I have had a MF-65 (SGM-type) for 3 years now. I have power steering and have replaced the PTO seal. The PS pump and resevour is on the left side. PS filters are readily available. Check the fluid level. You will need an adjustable wrench to get the cover off.

The PTO seal is available and is an easy switch. A 2" PVC pipe coupler is an ideal tool to drive the new seal in place.

Check out Big Dean's web page for more info.

BTW I paid $3500 for mine.

I don't know about power steering probs since my 65 doesn't have it. But replacing the pto shaft seal is pretty easy. The worst hassle about it is having to drain the 6 gallons of transmission oil before doing the work.

I agree with Eric - check the brakes. And also the hydraulics. See also Big Dean's pointers when inspecting a tractor, on his website.

Dave,

I have been using the same 65 for 30 years. I think they are a dependable tractor. Steering issues are probably their most common downfall if you do a search in this forum. It is normally an inexpensive repair. The cause is usually wear in the pins/holes on the centering turnbuckle. It is located in front of the radiator and actuates the valve on the p.s. cylinder. Most often a small ammount of wear in this link means power steering will work in one direction only.

I have not had any leaks on my p.t.o. shaft yet. Be sure to check the brakes. If the oil seal on the side of the tranny leaks it will get the discs wet. Here again - not a major expense to fix but maybe you can use it for leverage against the asking price.

If you have any more questions send me an e-mail.
